Keep Markdown and images together in Obsidian or GitHub
Export a ZIP with relative image paths, keep your edits and understand external image links.
Markdown often refers to images by URL. A note may look correct today and lose its pictures when a temporary conversion link expires. An archive with relative image paths is easier to keep and move.
Create a real export
Use field-notes.docx in the Word converter with image extraction enabled. The sample includes a small chart. Wait for completion, edit a heading in the full text if you want to test edit preservation, then choose Markdown + images (.zip).
For a large document showing only a preview, the ZIP action loads the complete result before packaging. To make edits to the entire document, load the full result first and edit that text. The archive uses the current text you are working with once the complete result is loaded.
The folder layout is:
document.md
assets/
<image-id>.png
Image names are generated from task paths; your export may use a different image identifier or extension. In document.md, a packaged image becomes a relative reference:

Open it in Obsidian
- Extract the ZIP into one folder.
- Move both document.md and its assets folder into your vault. Keep their relative arrangement.
- Open the note and check the chart in reading view.
- You may rename document.md. If you move the note away from the assets folder, update the image paths or move the assets with it.
For GitHub, commit the Markdown file and assets folder together, then open the Markdown preview. Other Markdown editors may differ in table, math and HTML support, so inspect those parts in the destination editor.
Understand the export message
The exporter packages images already generated by this conversion. It never downloads arbitrary image URLs from your edited Markdown and cannot fetch another task's files. External links and missing images are preserved, with a message telling you how many links remain external or unavailable. Those images may still require Internet or a replacement source.
Export limits are 128 images, 20 MB per image and 100 MB total by default. If you hit a limit, download the Markdown separately or reduce the image count. Save your output promptly: task access and conversion image storage are temporary, and an expired task cannot be exported again.
A ZIP is a portable document bundle, not a backup of the original Office file. Keep the source file whenever you need to revise charts, formulas or page layout later.
