Convert Word headings, lists and images to Markdown

A downloadable DOCX example, its actual output and a checklist for document structure.

A Word document has two kinds of structure: what you see on the page, and the styles stored in the file. Markdown works with the second kind. A line that looks large and bold is not always a heading.

Try the downloadable document

Download field-notes.docx. It contains a document title, an Observation heading, three bullet points, a table and a small chart. These are synthetic notes, so you can test the workflow without uploading your own document.

  1. Open Word to Markdown and upload the DOCX.
  2. Leave AI conversion off for this text-based document. Keep image extraction on if you want the chart.
  3. Start conversion and wait for the final result. Open the full text view to check the headings and table.
  4. Edit any unwanted spacing, then download Markdown. To keep the chart for offline use, choose Markdown + images (.zip).

The text conversion of the sample produces this excerpt:

# Observation

A short synthetic document for testing Markdown conversion.

* Use heading styles
* Check the table
* Keep images with the Markdown file

|  |  |  |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Item | Quantity | Notes |
| Notebook | 3 | Recycled paper |
| Pen | 12 | Black, fine tip |
| Total | 15 |  |

The exact blank lines and bullet marker may differ after editing. Check the meaning and structure instead of comparing whitespace.

Prepare a real Word file

Use Word's Heading 1 and Heading 2 styles for sections. Use actual list formatting rather than typed bullet symbols. A straightforward table is easier to preserve than a page laid out with many merged cells or text boxes. Remove the password before uploading an encrypted Office document.

DOC and DOCX both work, including supported legacy Word exports. If a DOCX is actually an old DOC container, the converter can repair that known case. A damaged archive or unrelated file with a changed extension still needs to be exported again from Word or WPS.

Check images and layout

Markdown cannot preserve Word's exact page layout, floating shapes or all chart behavior. A chart may become an image; it will not remain an editable spreadsheet chart. Review the source and output side by side when structure matters. With a long document, use Load full result before editing the whole file.

The ZIP contains your current edited Markdown and task-owned extracted images. External image links can remain online, and the export tells you when any were skipped. See keeping Markdown and images together for the folder layout.

The sample Word table produces an empty header row. In the Markdown editor, remove that empty row and move the Item / Quantity / Notes row above the separator if you want those cells to be the header.
